The Netherlands Ex-Servicemen and Women’s Association Queensland Branch Inc. (NESWA-Qld) was established in 1973 and incorporated in 1991. This organisation served as a community hub for Dutch ex-servicemen and women residing in Queensland, offering camaraderie, support, and a platform to honour their shared heritage and service.
During WWII Camp Columbia became the seat of the Netherlands East Indies Government in Exile it employed over 2000 Dutch people and many Australians. Other Dutch military personnel was scattered over the various Allied faculties of the Navy and the Airforce.
Given Queensland’s vast geography, NESWA-Qld’s substantial membership covered the entire state. However, regular participation in meetings, commemoration services, and social events held in Brisbane was more feasible for members living in the south-east corner of the state.
To ensure broader engagement, the association organised coffee mornings several times a year on the Sunshine Coast and the North Coast. These gatherings helped maintain a sense of community and connection among members outside the Brisbane area.
NESWA-Qld’s commitment to inclusivity and outreach reflects the vital role of regional events in keeping widespread membership networks active and engaged.
The organisation ceased to assist in 2015.
